The season will release May 27th! After being slated to release 'this fall' in last year's trailer, it's nice to see some cold hard numbers.

Resurrection of a concept

As I recounted in this entry, I was once a member of a forum/group on fanfiction.net referred to often as TRvBRC, The Red vs Blue Review Crew. There were several tenets that made this group unique, including the idea that we should support one another by mass reviewing each other's fics. We also discussed good writing and show meta in the pursuit of writing good stories for the site.

I find myself a fandom dinosaur—there aren't many of us left who became fans during the Recollections era of the show. I do miss this era of fandom and what I was involved with back then, and though I know some elements of the original group are worthy of being discarded (the idea that we should flame or mass review poor writing to help the writer improve, for example), I would like to suggest using this comm as something of the same concept.

Read fics that are linked on the comm.
Review them, if you are so inspired.
Use the comm to discuss show meta.
Run writing prompt challenges in the comm.
Discuss characters from the show, their motivations, and their characterizations.

I know fandom has largely moved to Discord, but I feel a DW comm is unique in enabling this kind of interaction. I hope we can use it more in the future.

RIP RoosterTooths.com

I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but at some point not too long ago, RoosterTooths.com, a fan site archiving transcripts of Red vs. Blue episodes and other early Rooster Teeth content, disappeared. The site had been around since, I think, 2005, though the owner had stopped adding new seasons after season 11. The site had a highly useful search function. I used it quite a bit for finding dialogue and studying character voices for fic purposes.

RoosterTooths.com now simply redirects to RoosterTeeth.com.

All personally-hosted fan sites must eventually come to an end. Sometimes official ones do, too. In the history of the Red vs. Blue fandom, there have been a few major losses of fan content. One is the disappearance of RvBfics.com, which was what it said on the tin, a fan-run archive of RvB fanfiction. Everything on that website that wasn't posted elsewhere is gone now.

Then in 2019, RoosterTeeth completely rebuilt the Community section of their official website, and when it went live, the old Community site was deleted, taking years of user data with it. That was years of fan content and fandom history wiped out, including who knows how many discussions and fanworks.

Though RoosterTooths was no longer active, it was a piece of fandom history used and beloved by many, and I know it will be missed by meta writers and fic writers who remember it fondly, myself included. Its loss feels substantial in the same way the demise of RvBfics and the old community site did, and I just wanted to take a moment to memorialize it.

Episode transcripts can still be found on the RvB fan wiki, and I'm pretty sure a lot of the early ones are just copy/pasted straight from RoosterTooths, though without that highly useful search function. So, in the spirit of some of our favorite RvB characters, RoosterTooths.com will live on after its demise, in a form that is kind of the same, but also worse!

Farewell, RoosterTooths!

Wash treads half a step behind her, also silent. Carolina follows suit until she can't stand all three silences at once.

[Discussion Post] What is the "Counselor," really?

Mod request: Can I get a character tag for the Counselor, please? Thank you!

It seems like Aiden Price's title of "Counselor" within Project Freelancer is often assumed to denote that he's a psychiatrist or some kind of mental health professional, but I'm not so sure about that. He seems adept at psychologically profiling and manipulating people, for sure. But to me, he never really acts like a mental health counselor or therapist. If he is, he's so corrupted the purpose of his profession as to render it meaningless to his actual role in Freelancer.

I have another theory. "Counselor" is a word that can mean a lot of things, but one of those things is a Senior Foreign Service officer. Now, this is specific to the diplomatic branch of the United States, and I'm not suggesting this is precisely Aiden Price's position. But it seems entirely possible to me that the UNSC might use the title "Counselor" to denote some kind of diplomatic or military officer who works closely with high levels of military leadership.

Which brings us to Project Freelancer. Dr. Leonard Church is a civilian scientist. Project Freelancer has no apparently leadership holding military rank above the agents themselves. They all ultimately answer only to the Director. So it makes perfect sense to me that the UNSC would assign a diplomatic officer to Dr. Church as an advisor, particularly on matters pertaining to military policy and procedure. (Thanks to donprisciotte who told me that in a subtitled version of RvB, "Counselor" is actually translated as "Advisor.") Price isn't a military officer, so he doesn't outrank the Director and doesn't have any actual veto power, but he's there to function in an advisory capacity. It's possible too that Price is meant to report to an outside authority as well as the Director.
